Health Complications of Diabetes

Diabetes is a progressive disease. That means, its condition worsens with age. If proper medical care and precaution is not exercised, over time it may affect vital body parts, namely skin, mouth, teeth foot, eyes, nerves, kidneys and heart. These problems are known as complications. But, the good news is that it can be reversed with nutritional food supplements, recommended lifestyle and dietary changes and exercise regimen.

Given below are the complications that arise out of diabetes:

Skin Complications –Skin-related complications sometimes become the first symptom that someone is suffering from diabetes. It is the causative agent of a number of skin-related problems, such as infections, itching and sores.
Oral Disease – Diabetics are at more risk of getting oral health complications than non-diabetics. People with diabetes have to face higher risk of dry mouth, burning mouth/tongue and poor healing of oral tissues. The disease may lead to complications related with teeth and gums, known as periodontitis and gingivitis.

Foot Problems— Diabetes may lead to infection to the feet. The Infection may lead to gangrene in some cases. Therefore, people with diabetes are always suggested to wear the best shoes to contain infection in their feet. In some diabetics, cessation of blood flow to the feet also occurs. Resultantly, they start getting non-functional.
Eye Complications: Diabetes causes eye problems like Glaucoma(gradual loss of vision due to damage of retina and nerve) and Cataracts(impaired vision as a part of eye, known as lens, becomes cloudy). People with diabetes have also higher risk of blindness.
Nerve Damage (neuropathy) – Nerves are spread all over the body. These are defined as bundle of fibres that transmits impulses of sensation to the brain and impulses from these to the muscles and organs. These are like electric wires. Diabetes cause damage to these nerves.

Kidney-related Complications—Diabetes is the main cause of chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. When people with diabetes experience kidney-related complications, they have to undergo dialysis, and when even dialysis proves to be of little help, they have to go for kidney transplant.
Heart Disease – Compared with the people who do not have diabetes, the diabetics are at higher risk of getting heart disease. Apart, they may even develop heart disease at a very younger age. They also tend to suffer from severe heart disease.
